Who Controls the 360?

What games do you think are the most prevalent on the Xbox 360? Shooters? Sports? Games about pinatas? FPS Source recently took the time to catalog all the current available titles on this particular platform to determine just what the dominant genre was. All the people complaining that the 360 is a shooter only platform can begin eating their words any time. Start with these : You. Were. Wrong. *mmmm, absolutely delicious!
They found that within those 137 games they researched, Sports (26%) and Action/Adventure (26%) scored the most titles. Shooters came in next with a combined total percentage of 17% (first person shooters with 11% and third person shooters with 6%). Their specific break down was as follows :
- Sports - 26%
- Action/Action Adventure - 26%
- Driving/Racing/Flight - 13%
- FPS - 11%
- TPS - 6%
- RPG - 6%
- Family/Party - 6%
- Fighting - 3%
- RTS/Puzzle - 3%
What does that list tell me? Well first off, quit making the exact same sports game with 20 different titles. I suppose serious hockey fans need 2 different versions of the same game released in the same week (I will assume each version offers something different) but I think one title for each sport is sufficient. It’s bad enough every year brings a new game in the exact same series. I could cover an entire wall in my house with all the different copies of Madden I have scattered around.
Second, why are there so few RPGs on this platform? I personally don’t play this genre. My personality cannot handle an open ended game. I need a beginning, I need a middle, and I need an end. Otherwise I will get sucked into the game indefinitely, never to be heard from again. But I know several people who do enjoy this style of game. It seems like that category is lacking.
Third, no retail titles of puzzle games please. I am a big puzzle game fan but to charge any more than an arcade title price for them should be a crime. As in locked up and throw away the key crime. I was confused when they released Tetris as a full priced retail game. Let’s not do that again please. The Xbox Live Arcade is an amazing feature. Utilize it wisely.
Seeing that breakdown of the game genres is very informative. I hope various developers for this platform will take some time to chew on that data and adjust their ideas accordingly. Pinata party games ftw! (That was a joke.) (Not really.)
