Have you ever sat there playing Super Smash Bros. and told yourself, “I’ve got a map idea so hardcore it’d make Samus wet her underoos!”? Well if you have, tell your friends to strap on some Huggies because it’s time to put your editing skills to the test. It’s been announced on the official Super Smash Bros. Brawl website that players will be able to create their own levels in about three easy steps. First, you’ll choose your backdrop, second your music, and the third step consist of actually placing objects. Just like any other map, we’ll be able to place platforms, ladders, traps and all that good stuff. Just the fact of the mapmaker being included in the game is awesome, but take a further look and it gets a whole lot better.

The map editing itself seems to be a very clear cut process , there’s a grid….and you place your objects on said grid. Now, let’s say you want to test out your godly creation before you expose it to the masses. Instead of having to go through some long process of saving and backing out, you can simply switch in to a player mode and it drops you in to your unfinished map. Now that’s not nearly it. Now you can save these maps to a memory unit and send them to your friends, but Nintendo is taking this functionality a bit further. You can actually upload your finished maps to Nintendo, and every day they will highlight a user created map and distribute it to the masses. You will only be able to play these maps for one day before it’s replaced by another. So if you tend to look at the glass as half full, you’ll realize that technically there’s an infinite game play value attached with custom maps.

Now remember, Super Smash Bros. Brawl was originally set to ship in early December 2007 but the release date was pushed back to 2-10-2008 for North America. Looks like we will be waiting a bit longer to create our own masterpieces.
