No Country For Old Men

The rumors and whispers are true. The Coen Brothers did an amazing job with another of their movies. Although No Country For Old Men may be their darkest and least humorous, it is perhaps their best movie to date.

Set in small towns in West Texas, No Country For Old Men (like other Coen movies) puts a lot of emphasis on the culture and native tongue of where the film takes place. Fargo is known for it’s thick Minnesota accents, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? is known for it’s southern slang, just as this movie will be recognized by it’s Texan phrases and lifestyles. The Coen brothers understand in order for a film to seem real, plausible and for viewers to relate to it the characters need to feel authentic and the dialog should match that of the region where the story takes place.

Throughout the film, you follow Llewelyn Moss, played by Josh Brolin, as he tries to escape from the incredibly unlucky circumstance he puts himself in. After stumbling on a murder scene which involved many casualties and lot of drugs and money, Llewelyn decides to run away with the money he finds so him and his wife can have an easier life. Little does he know that there are a lot of people looking for that money that will hunt him to the ends of the earth to get it back.

The acting and script of this film are top notch. There isn’t any slack with any parts of the production, which there usually hurts the other outstanding aspects. Tommy Lee Jones, although unfortunately type-cast as a southern law man, does an amazing job as usual. Josh Brolin who usually plays a villain in smaller films has a breakout performance which is sure to land him many more great roles. The Spanish actor, Javier Bardem, sends chills down your spine with the eloquent killer he plays in No Country For Old Men. Easily one of the best films of the year, if not the best. There is some violence scattered throughout but it is easily overshadowed by the rest of the story.

Final Score: 10 out of 10
